Those present received a fascinating insight from team physiotherapist Andrew Thomas into the extent of the planning to ensure the preparedness (as far as possible!) of the Equestrian Team-GB and of the Greenwich site for the forthcoming Olympic Games. Andrew recommended that those attending the equestrian events access Greenwich Park via the Thames Ferry and avoid the tube.
To: All Iceni, Cromwell, Leicester and Rutland Endurance Riders
This year the Inter Regional Team event is being held at Cirencester Park, Cirencester, Gloucestershire on 14 & 15 July 2012. We need riders in all categories from novice riders and horses through to advanced combinations to cover all of the distances. Joining the team or taking part in the selection process gives a real opportunity to gain valuable advice from the organisers, the professionals supporting the team, and from other team members. If you are a Novice rider and want to meet fellow riders from your area and learn more about endurance this may be exactly what you are looking for. More advanced endurance riders also gain from the experience and for everyone it brings a great sense of purpose and fulfillment by working with the rest of the team.
If you are interested in taking part please could you send me your full contact details (copied to both Heather Weston and Larissa Whiley) including name, address, mobile number and email. Could you also send details of your horse and your ride plans for the 2012 season.
This year we are inviting those of you interested in joining the team, and at least one of your crew, to come to a horseless training day being run by Brigid Fairman and Peggy Sofley at Troston Village Hall (near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk) on Saturday 11 February 2012 and a ridden training day in May (venue to be confirmed). Team selection will be made on ride results plus a selection ride at Wimpole Way on Sunday 17 June 2012.
It would be great to hear from anyone who is interested and if you are not sure please do call for a chat. Anyone who does decide to put themselves forward to join the team needs to enter the ride. We are happy to help those of you who express an interest, even if you are not finally selected for the team. My mobile number is 07724-052679 and my email is perfeq1@btinternet.com.
I am being assisted by Larissa Whiley from the Leicester and Rutland Group – Larissa’s email is larissa.whiley@talk21.com and Heather Weston from the Iceni Group – Heather’s email is weston772@btinternet.com.

We have now set our Rides Schedule for 2012, details are on our Events tab. For our EGB National rides we have included a link to the ride's EGB Schedule listing where you may log-in to enter on-line. Alternatively, please use this paper entry form for National rides rather than that on the National EGB site as the latter incorrectly gives the late entry fee as £5.00 (it has increased to £8.00).

If you renew your Associate Membership straight away
you will be sent the 2012 Handbook/Fixture List as soon as it is
printed, along with the January/February EGB Newsletter.
You will also get it quicker and save LREGB postage costs! But
please make sure that the stamp on your S.A.E. is the correct one
for the size of the envelope. There are envelopes that look
A5 size but are not, so they are too large for a normal 1st or 2nd
Class stamp and need a large stamp instead. Wrong
postage means that Chris Platts has to pay a charge of £1.22 to
retrieve your application from the Post Office!
Our group newsletter for December 2011 went out to

frustrated crossworders, the corrected clues are:
14 down - Possible favorite for the 1000gns next year (5)
11 across - Useful for digging fence post holes (5)
16 across - Place of various equestrian activities (5)

The Inter Regionals held at Barberry Castle 13 & 14 August 2011 brought mixed fortunes for the Eastern Region and our final placing in the competition was Fifth.
Leicestershire and Rutland Group had three members in the team: Carolyn Pacey in the 2-day 40/40, Gillian Wright in the 64K and Ray Davison in the 100k ER.
Carolyn and Gillian successfully completed their rides but Ray's luck ran out when Peski was vetted out with a slight lameness R-fore at 40k (thankfully he is sound again now).
The weather started cold with drizzle first thing Saturday but cleared up by 10 o-clock and was dry and bright for the rest of the weekend. Our team BBQ on Saturday was an enjoyable event and the whole weekend had a happy and friendly atmosphere.
Our Group presented a Trophy for the Highpoint winner of the 64K. It was a very nice Sheffield Pewter Tankard and guess what - it was won by Christopher Wray from Wales Region - the only male winner - lucky coincidence or what!
Congratulations again to Ray Davison and Peski on winning the 80km at Hexamhamshire in a very exciting racing finish.
Kerry
Dawson has posted a 12-minute video of her ride around
the Lion's Tail Pleasure Ride with Spud on Saturday 25 June 2011 to
You Tube.

Congratulations to Ray Davison and Peski who won the 65km Performance Formula at the Lindum Spirit at Market Rasen Racecourse.
We all wish them luck in the ER at the Hexhamshire in Northumberland next weekend.
THANK YOU to all the many helpers who made The
Lion’s Tail 2011 possible by giving up your free time so that others
could enjoy the ride.
THANK YOU also to all the competitors who made the ride worthwhile running.
We hope to see you all back next year, either competing or helping – or both!

The trip for me took just over an hour and a half. Driving in to Firs Farm was rather strange as initially the yard looked derelict but as I drove down towards the back of the buildings it was obvious that some of the barns and stables were still in use and right at the back adjacent to the small field we used for parking was an enormous and very new looking ménage.
I parked, unloaded a very excited horse – excited by all the lovely grass - and went off to the stables to get a cup of tea. Very civilized!
We then gathered together and were split into groups according to our EGB level. One group went off to see the Farrier, Physio, and vet with their horses. The second group left their horses tied up and went to see David who was talking about fitness, training and ride preparation. Our group tacked up and went into that lovely ménage for a short ridden assessment.
The groups then swapped around until we had all been to see everyone.
After a more than adequate lunch, to which everyone had contributed, we all returned on foot to the ménage and had a short talk and demo about crewing and trotting up for the vet.
We then tacked up and returned to the ménage mounted. We were split into two teams and spent a very enjoyable time playing team games that involved sponges, slosh bottles and bending poles.
The entire day was very enjoyable and very useful. Where else could you get your horse so thoroughly MOTed and have the chance to talk through any problems, from pre-ride training and feeding to loading, travelling, presentation and ride tactics for just £35.00?
THANK YOU to all those involved with organising the training day.
Val
Congratulations to member Larissa Whiley and her horse Equiloan Phoebes Gold who achieved a Gold Award in the Exmoor Experience Class at this year's Golden Horseshoe Ride on 16/17 May.
Congratulations to Abby Goodrich and Alice (Hayleys Empress) on winning the 90km ride at Haywood Oaks, Ollerton, Nottinghamshire this weekend.
The online Ride Entry system on the main EGB website has been changed – more options have been introduced so that the online system fits all situations – well hopefully!
Registered horse, different rider:
A member can enter a horse registered by them but then record another
person as the actual rider for that class. This rider may be a member
or a non-member. All their details must be entered, but once entered
they can be recalled and used again without re-entering them. Normal
checking and rules apply to this alternate rider. If the rider is not
a current member then Temporary Day Membership rates will be charged.
Registered rider, different horse:
A member can enter a ride but if instead of using their own horse they
wish to ride a different horse they can record the details of this new
horse. Again all the details must be entered, but they may be recalled
and used again without re-entering them. Normal checking and rules apply
to this alternate horse.
Please ensure that you enter all the details correctly – if they are not you may find you are charged TDM – especially if you forget to logon before entering.
For the second year running Ray Davison and Peski aka Sainwestwell Silver Mask have won the Kings Forest 80km ER held this year on 27 March 2011 at Wordwell Hall, Bury St Edmunds.
Val Cammock and her ex racehorse April's Comait have won the 2010 South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) and Retraining of Racehorses (ROR) Elite Endurance Performance Award. Runner up is last year's winner Sue Henry with Monkey Boy. They both collected their awards and a valuable cash prize during a memorable evening at the British Breeders Awards Dinner at the Grange Hotel in London.
ROR and SEIB are working together to encourage and recognise the success of ex-racehorses in other disciplines and the Elite Performance Awards offer a very valuable prize fund of £30,000 donated by ROR.
April's Comait had 23 Flat Racing starts during her racing career. Val then bought her eight years ago from her breeder Pat Appleby to train to participate in Endurance rides, whereupon she discovered that April's Comait was not easy to ride or train.
It took Val twelve months before she was ready to compete owing to the fact the mare was so weak and has a very "self opinionated" temperament with a tendency for "tantrums". Nowadays she is a "fabulous horse to compete" said Val. Her achievement this year has been all the more remarkable as April's Comait has been suffering from arthritis in her knee and has been off work for part of the season. The plan is now to retire her and she will probably be put in foal.
Val is very committed to Endurance Great Britain (EGB), she works part time in the EGB office alongside organising the Lions Tail ride and competing two horses in EGB competitions.
